Optimization is an act, process or methodology of making something (such as a system, decision or design) as fully perfect, functional, or effective as possible.
At Weoptit we take this further; for us, optimization is the process of systematically reaching objectives through optimal utilization of resources through mathematical modelling, making tough intractable problems understandable and solvable.
With the right components, anything can be optimized.
- Objectives
- Constraints
- Resources
What do you want to maximize? What do you want to minimize?
What does a given solution need to do? What business rules cannot be violated?
What can be reallocated? What sort of resources can you put into your operations box to reach results?
It is a nice categorization of analytics capabilities. Within this framework optimization tends to fall across all three categories as small data as well as big data can be optimized, but tends to mainly sit with other prescriptive analytics tools.
Prescriptions are what you get from your doctor and if you follow them you’ll (hopefully) get better. Same goes for prescriptive analytics tools – they tell you what to do and improve human decision-making.
(Side note: Optimization does not need follow a sequential, step by step approach – it can run concurrent in each area.)
logistics planning optimization

Logistics is a low-margin business where effective resource utilization is essential.
Service demand and supply are both tied to a specific time and place, which results in complex puzzles that are almost impossible to solve manually.
Optimization can help you improve efficiency and gain a larger profit e.g. in the following areas:
-
combining transports to the same transportation units (ride sharing, breakbulk sea freight transportation, meal deliveries)
-
picking up and delivering multiple shipments (waste route optimization, package deliveries)
-
utilizing cargo space efficiently

Well-planned is halfway done!.
Planning is puzzle-solving – certain rules need to be followed and there are clear metrics for what constitutes a good plan. Optimization is a way to solve the puzzle faster and better. It gives you a permanent competitive edge against other players in the market. Don’t just take our word for it though – see our compiled list of case studies and hear it directly from the users:

Decision Support

Decision support is needed when:
-
the stakes are big
-
decisions need to be made fast
-
the decisions affect a multitude of interdependent variables
From this it follows that decision support is most needed when something expensive breaks up, other things start breaking up too, it’s all a mess with sirens howling in the background and it needs to be solved RIGHT NOW by YOU! In other words, a normal Tuesday in operative control centers.
We have created a tool for supporting tough decisions about delaying or cancelling flights. Similar cascade effects, where one decision creates ripples through a larger network, are found in all traffic networks (rail, road, shipping).
